According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence, the player Jonathan D'Aversa (#6) of Dornbirn, time approximately 20:30, made contact with an opponent deemed in nature as Kneeing, IIHF Rule 536. As per the EBEL Fundamental Rules V. §4 (2) und V. §5 (1) b), the video evidence was sent to International PSC for a final verdict.

From the perspective of PSC (IDOPS), it is proven that Jonathan D'Aversa (#6) delivers a dangerous check to an opponent, through the action of a knee, that could have been avoided. There was no call by the Referee(s). In all situations and in regards to all players, responsibility for all actions, whether deemed accidental or careless, are carried with each player individually. It is evident that Jonathan D’Aversa is leaving the penalty box for the purpose of skating across the ice for a player substitution. Although the puck is not in the area, Jonathon D’Aversa is still responsible for skating lane and actions. It is felt by PSC, that the actions of Jonathan D’Aversa was more than accidental and an intent to make contact to the opponent through the following actions:

  • Body movement in direction of opponent
  • Extension of leg/knee in the direction of the opponent directly before and while making contact
  • Extended into the unsuspecting opponents ice lane
  • Sight line of opponent before contact

Jonathan D’Aversa must have a better ability to miss the opponent and be responsible for his surroundings within the ice surface at all times. From the perspective of the interantional PSC and according to the EBEL Penalty Catalog Ref Nr. 120 - Kneeing, Jonathan D'Aversa (#6) of Dornbirn is suspended for 2 games, effective immediately.

    Key Points:
  • contact with the knee
  • extension of body towards opponent
