Freitag, 01.Dezember 2017 - 5:49 - Some players of Erste Bank Eishockey Liga represent their countries at the Winter Games and now also two referees start on a journey to Pyeongchang/South Korea in February: Head referee Mark Lemelin and lineswoman Natasa Pagon were nominated for the Olympic hockey tournament.

"First I've heard it from other guys who are named for the tournament and then in the evening the Austrian federation called me. I'm very excited, it's a once in a lifetime experience", tells us Mark Lemelin one day after getting the big news. At the beginning of last season the 36 year-old experienced NHL referee came to Erste Bank Eishockey Liga where he found his way quickly. "I was used to the small rink and to other things. Here it's more circling in the corners and there are more scrambles but it was no big deal.

The native Canadian was surprised in a positive way of the level of play and is enthused by the companionship among the referees: "Everyone keeps in touch with each other, talking about our games. The development program is great, there has improved a lot from last to this season. The biggest thing I can help younger refs is to be calm. In playoffs for example everyone is more excited and more mistakes are possible. Despite having this atmosphere in the arena and the outside pressure, I try to help them to do their job", explains Lemelin who feels well-prepared for the Olympics, too: "For us it's very important to have the same standard of penalty calls. We need consistancy every single night, it does not matter either the top or the bottom teams play each other. It will be the same at the Olympics, so I'll be relaxed and enjoy it."
