Freitag, 22.September 2017 - 5:33 - The fifth round was opened with two games on Thursday. Vienna Capitals celebrated a 2:1 come-from-behind victory over EHC Liwest Black Wings Linz and set a new record with their 18 consecutive win. In Villach, EC Red Bull Salzburg earned a 3:1 win thanks to three second-period goals.

The Caps started offensively-minded with becoming dangerous on the first power play. Linz defended well and tried their luck on the attack, too. After Caps goalie JP Lamoureux made a save on Rick Schofield, the hosts came clos eto opene the scoring but Mike Ouzas held the upper hand against Jerry Pollastrone. When Robert Lukas had to go to the sin bin for four minutes, the table-toppers missed their target once again and the first ended goalless. The Caps had the better of the play after the restart but could not use their chances. At the other end Linz pressed when they had a man advantage for the first time. Just in the moment when Philippe Lakos returned to the ice, Philipp Lukas made the breakthrough on a rebound. The hosts needed some minutes to regroup and generated good chances until the end of the period - once again without success, though. It was an even-balanced game in the third. Just with Linz having a man advantage, Andreas Nödl tied it on a breakaway aftter 47 minutes. Only two minutes later Vienna's captain turned the game around with his second of the night. Linz had two more powerplays but they did not manage to score again. The Caps set a new record with their 18 consecutive win.

Salzburg beats Villach on the road
Both teams focused on the defense early in the game. However, both also were lucky with Brant Harris hitting the post after only 80 seconds. At the other end Stefan Bacher only struck metalwork. Late in the period Michael Schiechl wasted the best opportunity after a solo attempt. The middle frame was opened spectacular. First Salzburg goalie Bernhard Starkbaum made a great save on Andrew Sarauer and just a few moments later the VSV forward had to go to the penalty box. With a man advantage the Red Bulls opened the scoring thanks to Dominique Heinrich. Only 54 seconds later Alexander Pallestrang doubled the lead. After 35 minutes Harris lit the lamp again for the preliminary decision. The visitors defended well in the third with Villach only scoring the consolation goal by Miha Verlic.
