Late loss for 99ers, Salzburg with another CHL defeat

Samstag, 02.September 2017 - 7:27 - After playing a solid road game for 40 minutes, EC Red Bull Salzburg suffered another Champions Hockey League defeat to Tappara Tampere. While Fehervar AV19 and KHL Medvescak Zagreb won their opening game at Gábor Ocskay Jr. Memorial Tournament, Moser Medical Graz99ers conceded late goals against Eisbären Berlin to lose in shootout.

One week after losing the home game to Tappara, EC Red Bull Salzburg once again got off to the better start and Alexander Rauchenwald opened the scoring. The Finns became better, though, and after 18 minutes Otso Rantakari tied the game. With three seconds to go in the first Bobby Raymond restored Salzburg's lead after pressing hard for the goal. The home team pushed the Red Bulls back into their own end early in the middle and Niko Ojamäki lit the lamp for another qualizer. Despite the guests havng some good chances, the score remained at two after 40 minutes. In the third Tappara took over control and Veli-Matti Vittasmaki turned the game around from distance. With ten minutes to go Kristian Kuusela made the game safe for a 4:2 Tampere win. Tommorow the Red Bulls fly to Banska Bystrica for Sunday's fourth CHL group game.

Fehervar and Zagreb open tournament with wins
The Gábor Ocskay Jr. Memorial Tournament began with a quality and fast game between Medvescak Zagreb and Nové Zámky. Both teams showed up from the beginning but it seemed that Zagreb was more lucky as a shot from the blue line fell in the net from the back of the Slovak goalie in the first period. The second twenty minutes were similar to the first period, both teams had two powerplay opportunities, yet Zagreb scored another goal, 3 minutes before the end of the period the former Fehervar player Michael Boivin scored assisted by Privitera. In the last period, Zagreb started to play a safe game with less chances on both sides and the bears won their first game 2-0.

Fehervar started the game against the Lausitzer Füchse better. The Hungarians, with youngster Donát Szita in their lineup had a lot of chances at the beginning of the game and finally, Juha Uotila scored his team’s first goal from a powerplay. Fehervar missed another powerplay but not the next one, Uotila doubled the lead with a great shot. The seond period became more balanced, and Götz scored his team’s first goal in the middle of the period. After the goal, the guest became better and better, and they tied the game just before the end of the period, Götz scored after a pass in front of the net. For the last period, Fehervar came out better, 5 minutes into the period Gilbert scored the game-winning goal. In the remaining time the game got more and more exciting with many chances on both sides. 5 minutes left, the Germans attacked five on four without success. One and a half minutes before the end of the game coach Jarvenpaa pulled his goalie but his team couldn’t score and Fehervar won the game.

99ers let game against Berlin slip away
Moser Medical Graz99ers got off a perfect start into Energie Steiermark Trophy with Daniel Woger and Zintis Nauris Zusevics (pp) scoring for an early lead. Soon after Berlin pulled one back and early in the second the DEL record champions tied it with a shorthanded marker. Graz retook the lead twice but the Germans always answered for a 4:4 score after 40 minutes. In the third Robin Weihager and Zusevics restored the two-goal lead for Graz but it was not enough. In a final push Berlin equalized once again with Blake Parlett finding the back of the net two seconds before the buzzer. In shootout Micki DuPont kept nerves for a 7:6 away win.

VSV lose last preseason game
In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, EC VSV took an early lead against SC Riessersee thanks to Rob Flick. Just a few minutes later the Germans had turned the game around with goals by Michael Rimbeck and Simon Mayr. In the middle frame Flick received a game misconduct and Riessersee added a third on power play. Villach took many penalties now but despite being one man down Andrew Sarauer pulled one back. In an even-balanced final period no more goals were scored.

One shootout goal enough for Dornbirn
Swiss NLA side was a tough opponent for Dornbirn Bulldogs who did well defensively. On the attack they generated some good chances but both goalies performed well. Once Brodie Reid only hit the post. In a final push Kloten pressed for the breakthrough but DEC netminder Ronan Quemener stood tall. As a result the game went into the shootout where Matt Fraser decided it to Dornbirn's favour. On Sunday the Bulldogs face DEL2 side Frankfurt at home.

Black Wings also beat Ingolstadt
Liwest Black Wings Linz earned their fifth successive preseason win beating ERC Ingolstadt in the opening game of Vinschgau Cup 3:2. The Upper Austrians took the lead by Joel Broda after four minutes but conceded the tying goal just two minutes later. In many shorthanded situations, goalie Mike Ouzas stood tall for a 1:1 score after the first. Broda missed a good chance after the restart and after the halfway point of the game Patrick Spannring restored the lead. Just 25 seconds later the DEL side scored the equalizer again. Both teams had chances to lit the lamp for a third time in the final period. With 74 seconds to go Rick Scofield did on power play for a 3:2 win. Tomorrow the Black Wings face Färjestads BK.
